Butkus was the perfect example of a hometown boy who succeeded. After retiring from the Bears, Butkus became a popular actor, starring in dozens of films and television shows – many of which were with fellow former football star Bubba Smith. The Butkus Award, which recognizes the nation’s top linebackers in professional, collegiate and high school football, was established by him and the Butkus Foundation, which he founded and runs. The Hall of Famer also founded the nonprofit Dick Butkus Center for Cardiovascular Wellness, which has a cardiac screening program that uses sophisticated testing to help detect people at risk for heart disease and sudden cardiac death.
